Copilot vs. ChatGPT vs. Claude: which AI tool should a construction company use?
Most construction companies should start with the AI tool they already pay for. Here's how to pick between Copilot, ChatGPT, and Claude, and what matters more.
Kelly Stephens
Usually, the right AI tool for a construction company is the one you already pay for. If your company runs on Microsoft 365, Copilot is the natural place to start. If your team already has ChatGPT or Claude seats, start there. What decides whether any of them pays off is whether your people get trained on it using your own documents.
I train teams on all three at the same depth. One of the questions teams ask me before training is which one to buy, and a lot of the time the bigger issue is that the team isn't using the one the company already bought.
Start with what's already in your stack
If you're on Microsoft 365, Copilot is already in Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams. That's a real advantage. Your bid templates, RFIs, and vendor email already live in those apps, and people don't have to learn a new login.
If some of your team is already using ChatGPT or Claude on their own, that tells you something too. Find out what they're using it for before you pick a company standard.
When different people use different tools
If different people on your team use different tools, that's okay. We can build a custom training for each group around the tool they actually use.
What isn't okay is people pasting bids and contracts into personal accounts. Whichever tool you pick, set it up as a company team plan, and put an AI policy in place so everyone knows what can and can't go in.
Cost is about habits more than the tool
Usage costs can climb on any of these tools. Long conversations that never get restarted, the same big files re-attached over and over, and using the most powerful model for simple tasks all add up fast. A few shared habits bring that down, and we cover them in training. There's more on this in the FAQ.
Where the tool stops being the answer
Some teams start building their own estimating or sales systems inside a chat tool. That's a great place to start, and it's also where I see companies take on risk without realizing it. I wrote about that in why your company's systems shouldn't live inside a chat window. When a workflow needs to run every day for the whole company, it usually needs its own custom system.
How we help
Before any sessions, we look at whether your team actually needs upskilling and where. Then we train on Copilot, ChatGPT, or Claude using your own bid templates, RFIs, schedules, and records. Details and pricing are on the AI training page, and if you're still figuring out where AI fits at all, the AI consulting for construction companies page is a good place to start.
